Piano Sonata
I'm in the midst of writing a very substantial Piano Sonata for my great friend and wonderful pianist Jack Cheng. It's shaping up to be a very important piece in my portfolio: possibly the longest work of mine since the Symphony, and an important re-orientation post-covid. I know a lot of artists have had their career plans put off track by the pandemic, and it's certainly true of me. This piece is a conscious effort to re-find the path, which it does through the metaphor of water. It will loosely follow the flow of water from the high peaks and twisted alpine gum gardens, through the snowmelt streams and rivers as it finds its course through the landscape.
I expect to finish the sonata some time in May for a premiere in the second half of 2023
Piccolo Concerto
During covid I wrote a Concerto for Piccolo and Chamber Orchestra for Suzy Milton and friends. It's not been the easiest thing to get off the ground but I'm hopeful for a 2023 premiere.
Its a lively, birdlike piece in a kind-of traditional 3 movement form, inspired by a sense of adventure and wild abandon.
Student Pieces
For years now, I've made a habit of writing pieces to suit the needs of my brass instrument students. I'd like to eventually compile these and make them available, maybe as a book of progressive studies from basic beginner pieces to pretty advanced ones. Keep your eyes out for this one.
